Week 20:
Facts About Animals: Sharks
This week I’m going to talk about an animal you probably didn’t know about. Its name is the Goblin Shark. Sometimes, this rare animal is called a “Living Fossil”. This shark is rare and poorly understood species of deep-sea sharks. This species is 125 million years old. This shark may not be the most attractive, but it is very easily distinguished, by its flat snout, extended jaw, nail-like teeth, and pink coloration. They are usually between 10-13 feet long (when mature). Yet it can grow a lot larger. These sharks inhabit upper continental slopes, submarine canyons, and seamounts throughout the world at depths greater than 330 feet, in small groups.

Facts About Animals
Kangaroos
The kangaroo is from the Macropodidae family and is a marsupial. The kangaroo is the largest species in their family. Kangaroos are distinctively noticed by their large, powerful back legs, large feet for jumping, a long muscular tail for balance, and a small head. Female kangaroos have a pouch in which they carry their joey (baby kangaroo). This pouch is called a marsupium. They joey completes its growing inside of its mothers pouch. Unfortunately, wild kangaroos are hunted for their meat. Most of kangaroos have adapted to changes in their environment (mostly found in Australia), but the ones that haven’t adapted to their environment have become weak and hunted easily. The kangaroo is the unofficial symbol of Australia and is the emblem on the Australian coat of arms.

Week 17:
Facts About Animals: Giraffes
The giraffe is one of the tallest animals in the world. They are mainly distinguished by their extremely long necks, antler-like horns on the top of their head, and distinctive coat. Giraffes stand about 16-20 feet tall and males are about 3,500 pounds and females weigh less. The females weigh about 1,830 pounds. The giraffe is in the Giraffidae family, along with its closest relative, the okapi. The giraffes are found from Chad, north of South Africa, to Niger in the west, to Somalia in the east. They are usually found in grasslands, savannas, and open woodlands. They mainly eat acacia leaves. They get these leaves at most heights other herbivores can’t reach. Giraffes are hunted by lions, leopards, hyenas, and wild dogs. Giraffes do not get along well with others. One of the only times you will see a group of giraffes, is if they are all going in the same direction. They then group together for protection. Males fight for domination by “necking”. This is when two male giraffes fight for domination, a female, or to be left alone. The way they fight is by hitting each other with one’s neck, back and forth, until one of them gives up. The last one to give up wins whatever they were fighting about.

Facts About Animals Purple Animals
Did you know that there is such a thing as purple animals? It’s pretty cool how some animals are purple… But is it real or fake? Can polar bears and squirrels really be purple? Well let’s see... No squirrels are originally purple, when a certain Grey squirrel had been seen sporting distinctive, violet tinged coat; originally it attracted a lot of attention from British park people. The squirrels name is Pete. Pete was sprayed with a non-toxic dye in order to make it easier for researchers to track him. A purple polar bear in a zoo also brought a lot questions. The polar bear is not naturally purple either. It is purple because the zookeeper was giving him a bath and kept the shampoo on too long and it dyed his coat purple. It did not hurt him and it wore off after a while.

Facts About Animals Capybaras
The capybara is the largest rodent in the world, followed by the beaver and the porcupine. They can be found in dense forest next to water. They are closely related to the chinchillas, agouti (guinea pig looking animal in the rodent family), and the coypu (also known as the river rat). The capybara lives in dense forests and grassland ecosystems. They are usually found near ponds, rivers, or other bodies of water. Capybaras, full grown, weigh up to 60-140 pounds and are 2 feet tall at the shoulder. They are about 48-52 inches long and live about 8-10 years. Baby capybaras, when born, weigh about 2 pounds, have fur, and are able to open their eyes and see at birth. Some say they look like a very large water pig. Capybaras have short legs, a thick body, small eyes, and a blunt snout. Capybaras can be found to live in large families, up to 100 individuals, but usually live in smaller groups of 10-20. Unfortunately, the capybara is hunted for its meat and hide. However, they are not on considered a threatened species.

Week 14:
Facts About Animals The sea turtle is a turtle that inhabits all of the world’s oceans, except the Arctic. Sadly, most of the species of sea turtles are extinct. Sea turtles, along with other turtles and tortoises, are part of the Testudines order (the family of tortoises and turtles). Unfortunately, there are only seven living species of sea turtles; the Flatback sea turtle, Hawksbill sea turtle, Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle, Leatherback sea turtle, Loggerhead sea turtle, and Olive Ridley sea turtle. Every one of these species, with an exception of the Leatherback, is a part of the Cheloniidae family. The leatherback belongs to the family Dermochelyidae and it is the only member of this family. The species of sea turtles are defined by their anatomy. The scale between the eyes at the top of the head (prefrontal scale) and the number and shape of the scales on the upper section of the shell (carapace), help with the distinction. The Leatherback sea turtles are the only turtles that do not have a hard shell; instead, it has a small area of random bony plates beneath its leathery skin. It is also the largest sea turtle, measuring 6 to 7 feet in length at maturity, and 3 to 5 feet in width, weighing up to 1,300 pounds. Other species are smaller, being mostly 2 to 4 feet and proportionally narrower.

Facts About Animals
Tasmanian Devils
When you think of a Tasmanian Devil you probably picture a little cartoon character that spins around at high speeds. The Tasmanian Devils are actually carnivorous marsupials of the family Dasyuridae. Found in the wild only on the Australian island state of Tasmania. This animal is about the size of a small dog. The Tasmanian Devil became the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world following the extinction of the Thylacine in 1936. The Tasmanian Devil can be easily distinguished by its stocky and muscular build, black fur, pungent odor, extremely loud and disturbing screech, keen sense of smell, and ferocity when searching or eating its food. The Tasmanian Devil has the strongest bite per unit body mass of any land mammal predator. This particular mammal hunts its prey and scavenges carrion as well as eating household products if humans are living nearby. The Tasmanian Devil, like many other mammals, is able to climb, crawl, and swim. The Tasmanian Devil is a very ferocious and mean mammal. They are not pets! Next time you are on the computer take a few minutes to look up the Tasmanian Devil.

Pit-bulls
Why Pit-bull are banned and my opinion about it: Well the news says that pit-bull are very viscous dogs and they are biting people from left and right to the point that communities are considering breed-specific bans out on pit-bull. Everyone says that it’s the pit bulls fault that there this way yes they have a history and they were bred to fight and to kill people that shouldn’t be there, but it’s not the dog it’s the owner pit bulls are like any other dog . Pit bulls are just a dog you can’t just ban them for what there owner teaches them to do and if you’re so scared then don’t go near one or get one it’s as simple as that. Personally I would love to have a Pit-bull there beautiful dogs and very good guard dogs. And I know I’m not the only one out there that likes pit-bull and don’t want them to be banned.

Facts about Animals
Sharks
There are many different types of sharks but the 10 most commonly known sharks are: the Great White, Goblin shark, Whale shark, Blue shark, Leopard Shark, Tiger shark, Mako shark, Sand shark, Hammerhead shark, and the Greenland shark. People say that sharks attack for no reason but if you’re into sharks like I am, then you would know that’s not true. Sharks investigate with their teeth and when they bite down they taste the blood and they don’t let go. If you go surfing or swimming where there are sharks you should never go alone because if something happens you have someone there to help you. When you go where there are Tiger sharks, you don’t ever want to wear shorts that are sea turtle colors because that is the Tiger sharks number one food to eat. Remember be safe when you go where there are sharks.
